After months of preparation the joint school musical, Les Miserables' played to full houses over the past 4 nights in St. Michaels Theatre. Audiences were fulsome in their praise of an outstanding production and acknowledged their appreciation of the wonderful performances with standing ovations. The cast, backstage crew, production team, parents and the teachers involved have done both Good Counsel College and St. Mary's proud.

The Cast of Les Miserables on stage.
For those of us seeing our boys on stage, it is a valuable reminder of the depth of talent among the student body, of which we would often remain blissfully unaware were it not for the opportunities afforded to these young people by productions such as this. The huge amount of time and effort put in by teachers, school staff, and indeed parents,to bring a show such as this to the stage is also often overlooked. We owe all involved a depth of gratitude.
More details and pictures will appear in 'Featured News Stories' section.

Back at base there was plenty of important work ongoing as the French, Spanish and German Leaving Cert. orals were taking place, interviews took place for next years L.C.A. programme and parents of next years 1st year group met with school management.

On Tuesday night last the Co. Wexford Meitheal Alliance conducted interviews in the Brandon House Hotel for next year's student Meitheal leaders. Information on the Meitheal programme can be found in the ''Students' Corner ''section of this website.

On Monday, a group of American students from Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania, will visit the school at our invitation. Good Counsel College has a long association with Mercyhurst and there are currently 7 past pupils studying there. The American students who will visit are on a study programme in Dungarvan for this academic year and we have arranged for them to visit the Dunbrody famine ship and Kennedy homestead while in New Ross.

Worrying times for Kilkenny Hurling! Matthew O'Hanlon receives the Madigan Cup from Paula and Biddy Madigan.

The Madigan Cup took place on Tuesday and Kilkenny's 3 year hold on the bragging rights was ended with a comprehensive victory for the Wexford boys. Mrs Biddy Madigan, who was accompanied by two of her daughters, presented the cup to captain Matthew O'Hanlon.Great credit to the boys themselves as almost all match arrangements from team selection to accessing jerseys were done on their own initiative.  (More pictures in the 'Sports Reports' section of website.)

The Under 14 hurlers had an impressive win over St Peters in the Flogas Cup on Wednesday last, coming from 11 points down to win comfortably. Well done to them and their coaches, Mr Leigh O'Brien, Mr Wall and Mr. Moore.

Best of luck to the school's showjumping teams who will compete in the All ireland schools championship in Enniscorthy next weekend. Continue Reading...

A busy final term is up and running, coinciding with a week of beautiful weather.
The Oral Irish examinations dominated the Leaving Cert. landscape in the past week and next week the focus shifts to the European Languages. Good luck to all the students involved. Not long left now and very important that everyone makes the most of all tuition and study time available. In this regard, full attendance at all classes is critically important.

The cast and crew of the joint school musical have been putting in long hours putting the final touches to the production of 'Les Miserables' which plays in St Michaels Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday inclusive. We wish everyone involved well and by all accounts this is a show not to be missed. Below are further details and a link to St Michaels Theatre website where you can purchase tickets online.

Returning for their bi-annual musical, Good Counsel College and St. Mary's Secondary School present 'Les Miserables' in St. Michael's Theatre from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th April.

Les Misérables is a musical that was composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto  by Alain Boublil, and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Sung through, it is one of the most well-known and performed musicals worldwide. On October 8 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary on London's West End and became the longest-running West End musical in history. Based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, it is set in early 19th-century France and follows the intertwining stories of a cast of characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. The Tony Award-winning score features the song I Dreamed a Dream, sung as a solo by the character Fantine during the first act. The song On My Own by the character Éponine was among the major hit songs featured in the musical.

Nicholas Murphy, 3rd Year is in Wales this weekend representing Ireland in an International Badminton tournament. It is an enormous achievement to get to this level and all in 'The Counsel' are proud of him and wish him well.

School sports activity is winding down somewhat but there remain a few key events yet to take place. In house, the annual Madigan Cup will take place on Wednesday April 28th, with Matthew O' Hanlon and Joe Lyng captaining the Wexford and Kilkenny sides respectively. The Madigan Cup is an annual hurling match between boys from the 2 rival counties and is always a game of high intensity and quality. The trophy commemorates the Madigan brothers, Keith and Alan, who played on Leinster and All Ireland winning sides while in the school and who both died tragically while still in their teens.
The All Ireland Schools showjumping championship takes place in Enniscorthy on Saturday, May 1st and as ever we will be well represented in an event we have been fortunate enough to land in the past. Anyone seeking further details on this should contact Ms. Wessley.

The Good Counsel College Diaspora are making  their mark in all corners of the globe.

In a recent ceremony, John Murphy, Leaving Cert. class '93, was honoured by New York City Council for his 'outstanding contribution to the city and beyond'. The Proclamation with which he was presented cited his chairmanship of IN-NYC of which he was also a founding member and furthermore mentioned his record as a defence lawyer for the city fighting personal injury claims on the public's behalf.

John Murphy making his acceptance speech.

The Proclamation also referred to John's birthplace of Ramsgrange and to his time in Mercyhurst College where he, like many Good Counsel Students before and since, undertook his third level education.

The prestige of the ceremony is underlined by the fact that John shared the stage with Caroline Kennedy who was receiving an award on behalf of her late uncle Senator Edward Kennedy. It won't have been lost on either that their journeys to the hallowed halls of this great city began very much in the same place.

We congratulate John on his great honour and thank him for his ongoing interest in his Alma Mater in New Ross.

Another Good Counsel and Mercyhurst graduate, Stephen Nolan, stepped into the ring in Hong Kong recently for his maiden fight against Ben 'Boom Time' Hartwell. Anyone of us who know or remember Stephen will have maximum respect for 'Boom Time's' courage, if not so much for his sense, in sharing the canvas with the Foulksmills giant.
Suffice to say our man dispatched his unfortunate opponent with a minimum of fuss and we have no doubt there will be bigger fish to fry.

It should be pointed out that Stephen, who won a Leinster Senior Football medal with GCC in '95, has a considerable sporting C.V. having played for the Irish International Rubgy League side, The Wolfhounds, and having been captain of Terenure Senior Rubgy Union team for a number of years. We wish Stephen, and indeed all our past pupils well. Continue Reading...
