The mocks are up and running since Wednesday of this week. The smooth running of these exams places extra demands on everyone, staff and students as the sports hall has to be set up, papers have to be prepared and the timetable has to be adjusted to accomodate the longer exams. Then of course there is, for the teachers, the very time consuming job of correcting the many scripts.
Rehersals for the joint school production of Les Miserables started this week. These rehersals take place after school and require a lot of committment from all involved. No doubt the end product will be well worth all the hard graft.
During the mid term a group of students flew to the U.S., Loon Mountain, New Hampshire to be specific, on the now annual school ski trip. The expedition leader as ever was Mr. Teague assissted by Mr McCormack, Ms Cushen and Ms. Kinsella. The group, by all accounts, had a great time. Well done to all involved.
Luke Fitzgibbon, 2nd year, has been selected on the Irish schools swimming team to compete in the schools international in Glasgow on March 20th. A great achievement and while the school can claim little credit, we are nonetheless very proud of Luke's achievement. Best wishes to him.

This being mid term break gives us a chance to catch up on a few recent events and to flag a few upcoming ones not forgetting to mention that the mocks begin next week for Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. students. We wish them all the best in those and hope that they will benefit greatly from them with the real thing in mind a few months hence.
2 weeks ago, students from the only 3 Augustinian schools in Britain and Ireland came together to compete in the inaugural Augustinian schools Rugby blitz which was held in Dungarvan. Students and teachers from Good Counsel College and St. Augustines College, Dungarvan were joined by those from Austin Friars Secondary in Carlisle, England. The purpose of the event was to foster links between the 3 schools and to recognise the special identity each has as an Augustinian school.
The English visitors were hosted on Thursday night in Dungarvan and on Friday night in Good Counsel where they were plied with the 'Full Irish' the following morning before they  headed on to Croke Park for the Ireland v Italy game.
The rugby blitz, played in Dungarvan RFC resulted in wins for the Irish sides, the host school in U-15 and the Good Counsel in U-14. Our friends in St. Augustines treated the boys from all 3 schools along with their teachers to a wonderful lunch back at the school after the blitz. Many thanks to them for that. It is hoped that this event can be grown and developed into an annual event.

Hard to believe the mid term break is here already. Lot of work being done around the school in the past week with the Leaving Certificate Applied students having Task assessments and the DCG Leaving Cert. class busily getting their projects finished. All of this of course in addition to all the other work going on especially as the 'mocks'start in the week we return.
The past week also saw a lot of preparatory work done for the 2010/11 school year as the incoming 1st years had their assessments on Saturday last while parents'information evenings on subject choices were held for current 1st and 3rd years on Monday and Wednesday nights respectively.
The  proceeds of last weeks 'Good Counsel's Got Talent' came to a magnificent total of 2250 euro which was presented to the Haitian Appeal fund by the senior prefects on Thursday. The generosity of those who contributed is appreciated and will hopefully bring some much needed relief to those suffering the consequences of the earthquake. Well done to all the prefects, in particular, for conducting such a successful venture.

From Board of Management meeting on Monday night to Incoming 1st year assessments on Saturday, this was a week of intense activity around the school. The minds of exam classes are more sharply focused with the 'Mocks' looming while  Leaving Cert. Applied students were also busily putting the finishing touches to their tasks which will be assessed next week.
In addition there were a host of cultural and sporting events which took place over recent days.
A team of  6th year students won the Wexford Maths Teachers Association maths quiz early in the week. A second team from the school also managed to come 4th and the winning team of David Kirwan, Brendan Browne, Don Foley and Brendan Kirwan (all pictured below) will now go on to represent their school and county in the Leinster final of the event.
